Just Before Dawn

Those first birds

Into dawn

Their times break forth

In song:

Song in darkness

Sound, swoon and sense

Too sweet

For day, ear, clear

When dark

Primary to light

Gives expert note

In trees.

Branched owls

Leaf eyes.

Bids sing

Exhorting light

To change

What was, not half

An hour since,

Bright moon,

Robe of the glossy star.
