Girls Unearth a Good Book

Girls Unearth a Good Book

I believe this may have been the very first image I create for the purpose of encouraging children to read with a fantasy picture.  The girls have unearthed a book and it takes them away.  I love playing with images in Photoshop.  It’s a thrill to find out what else I can make the program do for me to create art.

More than that, I have a love of books and it really distresses me when children exclaim they don’t like reading.  What a world of wonder they are missing out on.  I feel sure they would love reading if they got past the aversion to the small amount of work involved.  You have to get to the place where the words are not just words, but become pictures, moving, growing, thinking, having an adventure.

  1. When I was a child the powers that be at the time gave us thoroughly boring books and nothing interesting. Now that has all changed for the better and children have good books that are really inviting

    • I think I know what you are talking about. I think maybe more effort is being put into books now. Also there are so many more writers for children than there used to be, the competition is fierce. Thanks for commenting.

    • It’s true. If all the details were added to the movie it would be days long instead of 2 hours. So they HAVE to cut the details and therefore lessen the story. Thanks for commenting.

  2. I think it is important for children to love reading early, or they run the risk of growing up to be adults who don’t read. But then I’m hardly unbiased…

    • Wow. You are brave. I can’t handle Stephen King even now as an adult. I get terrible nightmares so I avoid adult books. I love reading young adult and middle grade books because the adventures are great but there’s no sex, drugs or horror. I’m a child at heart. Thanks for commenting.

  3. it looks fun. it looks like the girls are flying a book kite, and they want to fly away with it like Peter Pan in order to experience the fantasy adventures in the book.

at first, i thought that the colorful leaves were fluttering butterflies, flying along to join their adventure.

    • Maybe in the next one I’ll use butterflies instead of leaves. That’s a great idea. I’m glad you like the “book kite”. Thanks for commenting.

    • Thank you. That is why I work on illustrations. It seems that books with pictures get more use than books without. I believe illustrations encourage children to read more. Thanks for commenting.

  4. The truth is that little children like to read books. They have no interest, they do not have habits for that. I do not know what is to blame for that. Parents, teachers or technology. You have created a wonderful thing.

    • You know, I don’t know what is to blame but I usually think it is movies and technology. However, little children only like the picture books. When it comes to chapter books or longer books they tend to not like reading. I think that is a terrible shame and I want to change that if I can.
