CAGED BIRD

By Maya Angelou

A free bird leaps

on the back of the wind

and floats downstream

till the current ends

and dips his wing

in the orange sun rays

and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks

down his narrow cage

can seldom see through

his bars of rage

His wings are clipped

and his feet are tied

so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings

with a fearful trill

of things unknown

but longed for still

and his tune is heard

on the distant hill

For the caged bird sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze

and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees

and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn

and he names the sky his own

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams

his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream

his wings are clipped and his feet are tied

so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings

with a fearful trill of things unknown

But longed for still

and his tune is heard

on the distant hill

For the caged bird

sings of freedom.

OWN THE SKY…

Blue sky

Grey sky

Rain sky

The same sky

Who’s skies are these skies?

Your sky

My sky

Our skies

Under African stars,

Who owns the skies?…

Who’s territory

Who’s soaring high up high?

Scarier than scary

Some say

Angels & demons are warring

for glory,

Some say it’s prophesied

that the hunter becomes the hunted,

Can only the skies truly tell

Or way down under

what saith the fires of hell?…

Blinded in the mind

Many be snoring

Some ignoring

Brothers & sisters go a whoring

Trapped in chains

Feeding off the curses

of their oppresses verses,

What could be worst than this

when the Most High said freedom?…

Oh mercy me

There’s a vibration of a rhythm,

Mother Earth she speaks

As the rising sun

Light comes up from the east,

Here, there and everywhere

Mother hen calls her chickens

strong, brave and the weak,

‘Watch out for deception

depression is a form of oppression

No cry no more

Breathe in

Breathe out Exodus

From the valley low

to the highest peak

Wings beyond the sky

Spread your seed

You were born to breed

Flip the script

Reverse the curse

Exit this,

Send their verses

back into its’ own doomed hearse’…

Your sky

My sky

Our skies,

Under these African stars

 My, my, my

The new moon takes on

a whole new romantic glow,

Oh if we can fly

Ooh oui, we

Own the sky…

  1. Lovely words to your poems, my little budgie Louis is in a cage for a reason but he gets to fly everyday.
In New Zealand if budgies are set free the other birds in New Zealand kill budgies.
I don’t feel bad about keeping him in a cage.
Oddly enough, Louis likes his cage, he flies out and returns himself to his own cage.

We take him out in the car in the cage on the backseat and he loves travelling with us.

  2. That’s a extract from Maya Angelou’s poem ‘Caged Bird’. A powerful piece no doubt that I cannot take any credit for. Maya Angelou was an outstanding writer and poet who has many other accolades. She is truly one of the legends of our time who inspires many of us to mount up and soar beyond…thank you.

  3. I can really relate to your poem, “For the caged bird sings of freedom”.
When we sing for freedom our mind, our body and our spirit lift to a greater height.
i want to see myself in that height!
