Darling Watercolor

This is one of my favorite watercolor techniques. I draw the image first in pencil lightly. Then I wet the paper thoroughly and then wad it up like I’m about to throw it away in the wastebasket. I carefully unwrap the paper and begin painting on the wrinkled paper. It is a form of “bruising” the paper so that the paint soaks into the wrinkles deeper and darker than the rest of the paper. It creates a sort of stained glass look to the paper. At first I was a little worried that the wrinkles would take away from the face or details, but in the end I really like the effect.
