You cannot bear smoke…

Does the smell permeate beyond the scope?

It seems to be a mix

of hickory and maple

wood burning because it

is hot enough to combust

but cold enough that you

can touch part of it.

The embers glowing

as if eyes

staring back from consumption

staring back from the abyss.

Stop for a second,

slip on your

deck shoes

and standing by the open fire

throw caution to the wind

not to the fire for caution burns explosively.

Grab the fire

and hold it aloft

victorious over nature

victorious over a tree

you are the smoke bearer

although you can bear no smoke.
