“If I could find anything blacker than black, I’d use it”. – J. M. W. Turner
A photo suite,
a portrait of prickly pain,
an ode to the blackberry bushes should be black …
blacker than black …
The sun was low, as low as my exposure. The shadows were deep. The sunlight hit my subject with raking light. – They were done completely in the camera and came out as they are. They look good this way … I have always appreciated an inky black and the time I spent making intaglio prints only increased this tendency in my photographs.
There is a hypothetical shade of black called fuligin which completely absorbs all light
It is considered a fictional color and is described as “darker than black”.
And then there is this: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/blackest-is-the-new-black-scientists-have-developed-a-material-so-dark-that-you-cant-see-it-9602504.html
That’s the real world analog of fuligin. Interesting article, thanks for posting…
Oh, and by the way I have just resubmitted this post from “drafts” where support left it for me to fix. I have a few more to fix as well.
Oh crap. This wasn’t the post I fixed. It was the other Black and white post. Nevermind….
Very interesting post
I was surprised how they came out and liked them.
Cheers!
Interesting post. Good work!
Thank you so much Daniel. Cheers.
Captivating
Thank you. They scratched me for capturing them. Evil berries.
It is beautiful! Something just screamed to be showed in black and white at times for me!
Thanks, Yes, in color it would be a mediocre photo probably. I like the expressionistic qualities of black and white as well.
Beautiful, looks like leather!
Thanks. It is funny how they look shiny and so different.
Nice
Thanks so much.
Very unique and stunning!
Thanks Carol.
I paid for this by crawling in the blackberries and getting scratched by looking through the camera and not paying attention to where my hands were. Blackberries can be evil.
Nice
Thanks very much.
Cool shot
Thanks, it was a fruitful experiment.
Eye catching, Howard. Excellent B & W picture.
Thanks Albert. Experimentation and luck. I really like B&W -almost to a fault probably.
The challenge that excites you is not it? But this work has done well.
Arresting shot. I had to look up Intaglio, so thank you for broadening my knowledge 🙂
Thanks Norman. Oh, most people say etching but that is one area or technique of intaglio printing. I have spent some time learning antiquated techniques. There is a very addicting satisfaction to peeling a print off the plate after a pass through the press.
Good shot
Thanks. I was surprised at the quality the leaves took. This was a very low exposure with direct sunlight and strong shadows. I had to crawl around to take it and the blackberries scratched me of course.
This is absolutely stunning Howard!
Thanks so much Gina, I too was a little surprised at the quality the leaves took on.
Cheers,
