The “Big ol’ Bowl of Nature”

Sometimes you are presented with a piece of wood that predicts what you can make out of it. My wife found this giant piece of cherry that was freshly cut, on the side of the road. It was so heavy and awkward I barely lifted it into the back of my Subaru. It was roughly 120 lbs!

I had a design in my head and started hollowing out the inside by hand and reading the way the wood was responding to the drying process as there wasn’t the same amount of wood anymore. The cracks stared and I just kept chipping away the inside then working my way to defining the thickness of the bowls outer wall which were roughly 1/4″ to 1/2″ thick.

My design of the bowl’s walls resulted in being nothing but dozens of daisies repeated over and over to create my desired effect.

It started as a 120+ lbs of cherry and after removing all the excess wood and drying it out it now weighs about 4 lbs!

I hope you like it!
