View up the Lockport Lock

Here in Lockport, New York out near Buffalo in the Western part of the state, the Erie Canal has to go up the huge Niagara Escarpment. To do this, the canal used to climb up 5 locks in a row and now since being widened and improved, there are two huge locks. Here we can see one of the locks in the dark area and the green doors to the other lock. This allows passage of super large modern barges of today. On the North side of the locks, they still have the handbuilt former locks of the original Erie Canal.
