The Hatchery – Chicago’s East Garfield Park

New flavor coming to East Garfield Park neighborhood on Chicago’s West Side and it is called ‘The Hatchery’, which is a non-profit food incubator that will allow local entrepreneurs to build and grow successful businesses. I was so excited to read about this while prepping to move to this neighborhood, per Curbed Chicago, as well as seeing its constructing while walking to my neighborhood gym or CTA Kedzie station.

An area like East Garfield Park truly needs this because it brings new energy and life to this Chicago neighborhood that lacks resources like this, as well as employment opportunities for residents within the neighborhood itself. Per, Curbed Chicago, the project will bring 150 new jobs to the East Garfield Park neighborhood in the first year and up to 900 jobs within five years.

The addition of ‘The Hatchery’ may also clean this sector up, which is one of the more high traffic areas with Chicago locals and neighborhood residents coming in-and-out via CTA Kedzie station, which sits on Kedzie and Lake, as well as removing possible negative factors that happen on a regular as well. From my observation and as a new resident of this neighborhood the intersection of Kedzie and Lake is one of the more sketchier areas in the neighborhood itself because of its traffic.

As a new resident of East Garfield Park and a current student at Kennedy King College in Chicago’s Englewood, I can only hope that ‘The Hatchery’ brings the same cheers and high hopes similar to Whole Foods Market in Englewood. Bring that pride to Chicago’s West Side!

    • I’m very excited because it’s only a block away from my apartment. I will definitely be one of the first to check it out once it’s complete. I plan to share another one of these writings in the next upcoming months.

    • I’m excited because it brings positive energy in the neighborhood, and gets rid of a negative (liquor store). I’m crossing my fingers that they turn the liquor store into a parking lot, lol

    • The Hatchery has several different organizations sponsoring it which makes me very proud. I’m excited to have this coming to the neighborhood that I live in.
