Lions’ Bridge

Lions’ Bridge.

It was built in 1889.

At its four ends there are statues of lions. The statues were placed in 1891.

The cost of building the bridge amounts to the huge amount of 260,000 leva.

It is said that it is no accident that lions are cast without tongues – not to tell how much money was stolen when building the bridge.

Others mention that lions are silent, not having to talk about prostitutes that are around the bridge.

This is urban folklore from the early 20th century.

Now Lions’ Bridge is an architectural and artistic monument of culture.

  1. I heard once or twice about this bridge but now I have really got to know alot about this bridge. Thanks for sharing such a vital information.

  2. Very nice looking bridge but I wonder where and why they would have chosen lions to guard the bridge. Oh they might have seen lions on safaris or zoos and known that they were the king of beasts but why in Bulgaria of all places. At least I think it is in Bulgaria? Maybe you could enlighten me if you do not mind. Thank you.

    • Shortly before the liberation of Bulgaria from Turkish slavery, a revolutionary committee was formed to revolt.
Four book sellers who are members of the Sofia Revolutionary Committee are hanged by the Turks.
These lions are a symbol of their patriotism and self-sacrifice.

      • Thank you very much for your clarification. I appreciate it. Now I understand why lions were chosen. As king of the animal kingdom they represent strength which the book sellers had to face the Turks.
