GEOMETRIC LIGHT: Roofs & Walls of Silves, Portugal

I posted some high-contrast black and white photos of Silves a week ago here. Now for some full-colour shots of the same town, concentrating on walls and roofs. Please upvote your favourites 🙂

#1 View across the Rooftops

Silves is a hilly town, and there are many interestingly-vantaged views to be enjoyed. You just need to keep your eyes open and look around, as you meander through its medieval alleys!

Archers' gaps in the castle walls. What caught my attention here was the play of light and shade on the marks on the stones left by the hewing tools all those centuries ago by craftsmen long forgotten. They left their mark!

#3 Earthen Shades

Look at the various shades of the roof tiles! They are richly redolent of the earth and clay which is their ultimate source 🙂

#4 Old and New

Combination of old and new tiles on these roofs directly below the castle's battlements.

A fairly good contrast to the Norman colors has been achieved

#5 South Wall of the Castle

The castle dates mostly from the time of the Moors, when Portugal was part of the Islamic Caliphate, 1000 years ago or so.

  It is almost entirely hewn rock, Elenka. Maybe some bricks added later.

#6 View from the Castle

I enjoyed looking at the patterns formed by the sharply angled roofs and the detail of how the roof-tiles caught the sun and cast shadows.
