Classic Details of a Skyscraper

Here we are taking the long walk back across Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania towards the Heinz History Center. There were many fancy glass faced skyscrapers but here there were some classic exteriors along the way.  This older building was more appealing to me because it had so much intricate gothic detail. Can you imagine cutting the stone for such detail back when it was made?

  1. What a beautiful building. The old architecture was so much more appealing and majestic. The Gothic style is absolutely fabulous looking. It reminds me of some of the old European cathedrals. I just hope there are no gargoyles poised to come down and swoop up the pedestrians at night though. Just kidding of course. We also have some old buildings here in the Outaouais valley like the Parliament, the old Quebec buildings and fort etc. but nothing as extravagant as the building in your photo. Remarquable.

  2. I live in Chicago where the very first skyscrapers were built. (It helped that the city had burned to the ground a few years earlier.) We also have the tallest non-skyscraper in the world. There are some very beautiful buildings built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Unfortunately in the mid-20th century Chicago architecture came under the influence of Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe which meant that everything looked like a box. Fortunately that has started to change in the last few decades.
