Secrets of the black-hooded lady In a scarlet shawl

Who is this mysterious lady? Those who know her, say, she is heaven sent. To others, she is just another facet of the cosmos conundrum. A black hooded figure by all measures can be foreboding, intimidating and downright terrifying. … I believe it all began after I was given a kid’s puzzle game that showed a menacing, hunched black-cloaked, hooded entity…

This is however, where the creature in question departs entirely from that menacing specter. Some call her a ladybird while others dub her ladybug.

1. LADYBUGS REALLY ARENT BUGS. THEY’RE BEETLES!

The term bug applies usually only applies to insects of the order Hemiptera known as the true bugs. Ladybugs, on the other hand, belong to the group Coleoptera which are beetles.

2. “LADY” IS IN HONOR OF THE VIRGIN MARY.

European crops during the Middle Ages were plagued by pests. Farmers began praying to the Blessed Lady, the Virgin Mary when they discovered the heaven-sent good qualities of the humble ladybug in a garden.

3. A LADYBUG CONSUMES AS MANY AS 5,000 APHIDS IN ITS LIFETIME.

Almost all ladybugs feed on soft-bodied insects and are useful plant pest predators.

4. LADYBUG LARVAE RESEMBLE TINY ALLIGATORS.

Like miniature alligators, they have pointed long abdomens, and legs that protrude from their spiny bodies.

5. LADYBUGS LAY FERTILE AND INFERTILE EGGS – ON PURPOSE!

During tough times, a ladybug will lay more infertile eggs to give her babies a better chance of surviving.
