Today was an interesting day. I went to pick up my daughter in law from her college classes and noticed this Juvenile Black Crowned Night Heron.
Black-crowned Night-Herons are common in wetlands across North America. True to their name, these birds do most of their feeding at night and spend much of the day hunched among leaves and branches at the water’s edge. Evening and dusk are good times to look for these. These rather stout, short-necked herons are flying out to foraging grounds.
For some reason this bird was out during the day. He is a juvenile, with his baby fuzzy feathers still poking out.
They leave the nest at 1 month old, although they cannot fly yet. They forage for food in the bushes at night and flock together again during the day with family to roost in the trees.
This one seemed in distress. They are not usually this friendly. We were this close to him, and he didn’t fly or hop away. We called the campus police and they called the audubon society to see if they could help.
We kept him company until they arrived.

The full grown image, didnt load. They are not brown at all when they get theyre grown up feathers. They look like a penguin in color, black and white.
