Great Tit #2

Great Tit/Parus major/ is one of the largest species of shrews and, at the same time, the most widespread. There is no pronounced sexual dimorphism, it is mainly fed with insects and small invertebrates, but winter time and food shortage is omnivorous. Breeds in holes and hollows on trees. In Bulgaria is a protected by the law kind. However, it is the most common bird in Bulgaria after sparrow and domestic pigeon.

Some time ago the Great Tit was chosen as a symbol of Sofia. In winter, when snow falls, they find it harder to find food. A packet of pips is worth a little more than a leu. This investment is enough to give you great pleasure and be helpful. This bird, a symbol of Sofia, is accustomed to eating out of the palm of everyone who feeds.

It’s interesting how they find you. You stand in one place, put a few pips in your hand and in about 10 minutes they are already around you. Then it follows the most interesting. The bird landed at the top of his fingers, grabbed a seed and fled. Sometimes there’s a whole bunch of them. They land, take off, and then come back again. We did an experiment – they just take food from the hand. A colleague puts his seeds on his head and hopes! – they are on it. It is interesting if only in an urban environment this bird is so friendly, but that is what specialists know. If you decide to enjoy these birds, still check what their favorite food is, nothing in the winter is almost omnivorous.
