Mantis are kinsmen with cockroaches. They have a very good camouflage and can stay still for a long time. The body length of most of them is between 40 and 80 mm. The smallest mantis is represented by the Mantoida genus from South America, the smallest of which is Mantoida tenuis – only 12 mm. The largest ones are Toxodera and Ischnomantis with almost 160 mm.
Most mantis, such as Phyllocrania paradoxa and Hymenopus coronatus, are active during the day. They wait for a long time until their victim approaches and grabs her with their tentacles. Other species such as Popa spurca, Eremiaphila and Heteronutarsus, who live in deserts and semi-deserts, run very fast, pursue the prey and surround it. Besides insects and spiders they can capture scorpions, small snakes, hummingbirds and small mammals.
I like having mantids around here. They are extremely helpful in our garden.
Believe it or not there is a Marvel Comic book character named Mantis who is female and was friends with The Swordsman in the Avengers comic books in the mid 1970s.

Good post bro nice information
Nice photos. For some reason this past summer was a good one for seeing mantises in the Chicago area. A friend of mine who lives just across the border in Wisconsin even saw one and they are exceptionally rare there.
We’re getting what we call the Chinese Mantis. It’s not native to the USA but was imported from China in 1896 for pest control and spread.
Yes, many species are transported or naturally migrate.
Nice post, but you probably should’ve used font legs instead of tentacles…
Awesome post and beautiful photo!

I believe so, but all this time I’m not trying to find out more about my mantis, my friend.
The article was awesome! I have to say the two images of the Preying Mantis and the berries was beyond amazing. How did you capture such a picture?
Quite at random : ) We were at Lake Kerkini shooting birds and accidentally wearing a macro lens.
Excellent article – Never knew this before
