Personally I think the elephant seal is a real cutie. Unfortunately, it became the target for commercial hunters, particularly for its oil-rich blubber. It was way back in 1892 that people began to suspect the elephant seal had gone extinct.
Then in 1910 people discovered about 100 of them on a Guadalupe Island and in 1922 Mexico turned the island into a government-protected biological preserve. Once again the elephant seal could live safely and freely. Today there are 160,000 elephant seals once again enjoying life.
