Box Turtle, exact species unknown

Box Turtle (2014-06-17 12-18-32a)

Box Turtle (Genus Terrapene) I’m not sure of the species of this turtle. There are a couple of species found in the area and, unfortunately, the photo does not show the details necessary to tell them apart. The rather plain brown carapace (top shell) which lacks clear markings indicate an older individual. (Some box turtles have been known to live to the age of 125 years.) The red eyes indicate that this individual is a male. (Females have brownish eyes.)

The photo was taken at the interpretive center at the River Trail Nature Center, 3120 Milwaukee Avenue, Northbrook, Illinois.I used a Nikon Coolpix P7700 camera to take the photo. I used Luminar 2018 to apply the Accent and Details Enhancer filters, lower the brightness and boost the contrast.
